Fragile Moon 03:21
Fragile Moon – Sophie Bancroft (©2019 PRS/MCPS) I heard your song A haunting cry That calls a purple haze of charcoal trees. What stirs you in These gentle skies? A fragile moon that tells no lies. Transparent shadows, sounds of slumber Breathing, breathing. A flicker of tentative light Your call is strong in your solitary state. What keeps you there What thoughts run wild And stir your senses when you Should be sleeping, sleeping, sleeping. A nightingale A luminescent landscape Comforts yet intrudes upon repose. A backdrop to a fertile mind That follows pathways to and fro. Never finding peace Never finding peace Never finding sleep.

Miles Away 04:47
Miles Away – Sophie Bancroft (©1995 PRS/MCPS) You’re miles away And I want to talk to you. You’re miles away And there’s so many things I want to say. You’re miles away I want to reach out and touch you But you’re miles away. Just a memory Is all I have to hold on. Just a memory Is all I have to keep you alive. And this sweet memory Makes my longing feel worth it But you’re miles away. I wanna reach out And relive the vibe that makes me Feel good whenever You are beside me. Wanna reach out And know that you are there. But you’re miles away And I want to talk to you. You’re miles away And there’s so many things I want to say. You’re miles away I want to reach out and touch you But you’re miles away.

Blue Room 03:49
Blue Room – Sophie Bancroft (©2016 PRS/MCPS) In a blue room I will lie With dancing shadows on the wall Like clouds rolling by. And they beckon with their shapes Bringing dragons to my world Colouring in the places they leave behind. They remind me of you And the space between my fingers Where your fingers once fit through And the circle we completed That never seemed to end, Now has a beginning, middle and an end. In a green room I will dream Of sparkling, crystal, shiny water Bubbling in a stream. And of spring and hope and life When the sun begins to show And calls the new shoots to live and love and grow. They remind me of you And the space between my fingers Where your fingers once fit through And the circle we completed That never seemed to end, Now has a beginning, middle and an end. In a dark room I will cry For hidden possibilities that now pass me by. And an overwhelming love For those I hold so dear And those long gone, but very much still here. They remind me of you And the space between my fingers Where your fingers once fit through And the circle we completed That never seemed to end, Now has a beginning, middle and an end.

Far From Mars – Tom Lyne (© 1994 PRS/MCPS) Once there was a farmer in the town Who said he’d visit Mars. Wasn’t much that we could really say Other than that’s real far. Family came together All his good friends too. Talk of how to help him Things that we could do. How to make this journey Far from Mars. Everybody started making things And painting all the parts. All the pieces fit together well Everyone had to sing. In the farmers garden Rose a wondrous sight. Dancing round the bonfire Singing through the night. Celebrate a starship Far from Mars.

Comfort 03:36
Comfort – Sophie Bancroft (©2017 PRS/MCPS) Go lean against the crumbling walls That stand the test of time. Breathe in the dust from those long gone Who worked and lived and sheltered here. Go put your arms around those trees Resplendent in their age. And press your cheek against the bark Invit the strength and love and life. Once their world was crazy too Their leaves torn to the ground. A carpet now to lie upon A place to shelter, safe and sound. Go seek the sea and golden sand Of wild liberty. Stretch out your arms and taste the spray From waves that dance and pulse And dance again. Once their world was crazy too Wild horses chase the sea. The pull of moonbeams comfort you Go sail the ship Serenity.

"a joy from start to finish" JAZZVIEWS

“This is music to chill to, possibly over a nightcap. Bancroft’s lyrics are thoughtful and poignant, the overall sound calming and warm – just the ticket for the present, Covid times." London Jazz News

"If there ever was a jazz orientated album to induce a sense of calm and tranquillity to the listener, this one is surely it." JAZZVIEWS

March 23rd 2020 - the Covid 19 ‘Stay At Home’ order came in to effect in Scotland. As musicians with portfolio careers our perpetual juggling of administration, planning, marketing, and survival strategies that go hand in hand with writing music, rehearsing, teaching, and travelling to performances all came to a halt. As a married couple who are also a duo we were fortunate during lockdown that we live together and so were able to keep playing music. Our daughter and granddaughter Lisa and Emma moved in with us for lockdown too. This unusual change in circumstances took a while to adjust to, but as it became the new normal, we began to look for positives and opportunities. By the end of April 2020, one of the ideas we put into motion was to create a weekly Facebook livestream performance from our sitting room on Monday nights.

It is an unusual atmosphere to play a concert in your sitting room to an unseen audience whose only feedback arrives in the form of likes and comments read after the fact - how lovely though to see those enthusiastic comments of support and appreciation. The sound checks were an ongoing process of trial and error that included our daughter standing outside the window with a sign saying, voice is good, need more bass, and guitar is too loud. A strong and faithful audience attended every Monday night, drawing close to their laptops and smartphones with their gin & tonic or bottles of wine positioned ready for 8pm.

Lockdown created the space and environment to study, practise and evolve. Regular playing distilled our identity as a duo and allowed us to re-imagine old and new favourites, learn different ways to orchestrate our duo sound, and reinforce the strength of our live(stream) performances. Doing this kept our sanity and wellbeing at an even keel despite the global pandemic and unexpectedly our duo became match fit for recording with an extensive repertoire of well-rehearsed new and old material. These are some of our favourites.
